General A.P. Hill was a pivotal figure in the bloodiest battle of the Civil War at Gettysburg. After his education at West Point he abandoned the United States military for a command post with the seditious Confederate Army. Gettysburg was a battle so vicious that remains of combatants were still being found as late as 1996.
